Provinces to get full water share: IRSA

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) decided on Saturday to give provinces their full share of water, overturning a previous decision on slashing water shares by 30 percent.

According to an IRSA press release, Punjab would receive 126,000 cusecs of water, Sindh 157,000 cusecs, Balochistan 120,00 cusecs and NWFP 4,000 cusecs from Saturday.

Only the water that would remain following the distribution would be stored in reservoirs.

According to IRSA, no province has been given water out of the share of another province. “In fact, an increase in water provision has been made, as water inflows have increased because of the high temperatures,” said the IRSA statement.

“Earlier, Punjab was being given 102,000 cusecs, while Sindh was being provided 116,000 cusecs. But Sindh’s share has now been increased by 41,000 cusecs and Punjab’s share by 24,000 cusecs.”

According to the IRSA, the inflow into dams and rivers is 329,540 cusecs, while the outflow stands at 328,325 cusecs.

The authority’s decision not to slash provinces’ share by 30 percent comes amid a power crisis in the country, with load shedding tormenting most areas of the country.
